The All Progressives Congress, Edo State Chapter, has accused the Commissioner of Police CP Funsho Adegboye of
complicity. This followed the fatal shooting at Benin Airport exit gate in Benin City by armed political thugs that led to the death of a Police Inspector, leaving an unspecified number of persons injured.
Inspector Akor Onu, one of the police orderlies attached to the convoy of Senator Monday Okpebholo, Candidate of APC in September 21 Edo State Governorship election, was allegedly murdered in the line of duty at the Benin Airport exit gate violence.
Addressing officers residents of Edo State late Thursday in Benin City, Comrade Tony Kabaka Adun, APC Youth Leader in the State, alleged that he drew the CP’s attention to the planned attack on APC supporters by hoodlums who laid siege to the exit gate of the Airport, but his complaint, was ignored.
He lamented the Police boss and a Deputy Commissioner of Police neither deployed his men to stop the hoodlums from unleashing terror on them or call for a reinforcement to avert the reign of terror by armed thugs, a claim TheNewspad could not immediately verify.
Adun, who led a group of angry protesters across major Roads in Benin City after the incident, called for investigation into shootings, arrest of the culprits involved in the dastardly act.
He said, “we are saying it the way it is. Before the incident took place, I met with the Commissioner of Police who was with a Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Airport VIP lounge. The CP was even begging Governor on phone to tell them to tell them to stay action.
“I informed them that those people (hoodlums) have blocked the two entrance of the Airport and they were shooting sporadically.
“We were not there to fight anyone. We are not armed. But, the CP ignored our complaint. He (CP) couldn’t even mobilize his team to intervene.
“There are some faces of security agents that youths will see, they will humble themselves because they know themselves in the street.
Continuing, the APC Youth Leader alleged that “after they (hoodlums) shot this mobile policeman in the presence of CP who witnessed the whole charade as he was moving out and going inside the VIP lounge”.
According to him, “He (CP) couldn’t address them (hoodlums) to stop the shooting. Now, a mobile policeman had been shot, while four persons were sustained gunshot injuries” after the attack that nearly cost Okpebholo’s life.
The State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare in a statement issued on behalf of the State Government, accused Mr Philip Shaibu, whose impeachment as the State Deputy Governor was voided and reinstated by Justice Kolawole Omotosho of Federal Federal High Court judgement, of instigating violence in the State.
A Benin based pressure group, Talakawa Parliament, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, in a viral video, bemoaned the deployment of coercion and employment of thuggery by non State actors in major political parties, seeking to succeed the outgoing Governor of the State, Mr Godwin Obaseki.
Edokpayi said, “I heard that Policeman was killed today over a fracas between PDP and APC supporters. Why will you kill your fellow brother? I also heard that a lot of people were injured today”.
He urged Edo youths to be wary of maverick politicians antics and reject been used as canon-fodder to achieve their own selfish ambitions.
