Edo LG boss sacks two tax collectors for not meeting target

The chairman of Oredo Local government Area of Edo State, Tom Obaseki has allegedly sacked two tax collectors for failing to meet projected daily revenue target that was set for them by the Council.

Council sources said the move is part of the ongoing reforms by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Cousin who has vowed to streamline revenue collection in the Area and make positive impact.

In a twist of fate, the workers (name withheld) have been absorbed into the revenue Unit of Ikpoba-Okha Local government Area of the State, few days after their disengagement.

A Council staff told TheNewspad that, “Two revenue collectors sacked by the Chairman are now in Ikpoba-Okha Council. They were given jobs with N50,000.00 cash gift each and assured improve working condition of service.

“Oredo Chairman is not carrying anybody along. He feels that he can do it alone.
“Now, revenue has dropped since he introduced unpopular government policies that do not motivate workers who face the risk to ensure that the Council gets revenue.

“One of out ticket boys was killed recently. Yet, nothing was done.
“Tom Obaseki is like his brother, the Governor. He plucked the loopholes and has introduced intercom to monitor every Council worker.

“He gives contracts, including the painting jobs to his friends after collecting job quotation for award of contracts from our boys”, the Council staff said.

But there are indications that some officials feel sidelined appear to frustrating the move by the Council boss, according to investigation.

 

…relocate NIMC verification Centre

 

In the meantime, the Council boss has also approved the relocation of National Identity Card Management Commission, NIMC) Centre at the Council Secretariat.

The Centre undertake National Identification Number, NIN Enrollment and Verification for residents of the State daily except weekends and public holidays.

The NIN Centre was relocated to Benin Central Motor Park at Obakhavbaye in the Local government Area, to pave the way for the newly created ‘Logistics Unit’ in at the Council’s Secretariat.

Similarly, no fewer than four Management staff of the Council, including Head of Revenue Department of the Council have been sanctioned for alleged fraud.

The alleged fraud, which was perpetrated before Mr Tom Obaseki who blew the lid, assumed duty few months ago.

The indicted officials are undergoing disciplinary action in Edo Government House in Benin City, the State Capital, while the State House of Assembly and the Legislative Arm of the Council, which is empowered by law to investigate the officials, look on.
