3 children killed, 1 missing in collapsed building

Three children whose ages range from 11 and 14, were killed when a building collapsed at Sabon geri area also known as ‘no man’s land’ in Bage Local Government Area in Kano State, North West, Nigeria.

The building collapsed due to overflow of the water in the area, where the house is located, echoes the need for an improved safety measures to mitigate future disasters.

A girl whose name was given as Damilola, has been reported missing in the incident when a 2-storey building housing the family of six, collapsed at about 5:15a.m on Thursday morning.

Two injured parents (husband and wife whose legs were broken), trapped in the disaster, had been rescued and admitted to hospital for Medical attention in Kano State.

A combined team of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Red Cross, the Nigeria Police personnel carried out the operation by a heavy duty equipment, which was besieged by onlookers.

A neighbour, Loveday Okoh said that his attention was called to the incident and he quickly mobilized to the scene, noting that “the children were directly under me”.

“The building collapsed around 5:am. I was called by one of my members that the building here collapsed”.

According to him, “we have seen three boys, all confirmed dead, and two parents, husband and a wife. We are just praying that there should be a miracle Damilola is still alive”.

Executive Secretary, Red Cross, Abdullahi Mustapher, said three persons died in the collapsed building while the two parents survived.

The missing child, according to him, “is only one person that we are suspecting to be under the rubble. That is why rescue operation is still ongoing”, he said.

Territorial Coordinator, NEMA, Nura Abdullahi revealed that that his officials and other responders mobilized to the scene.

Managing Director, Kano State Urban Development Authority, Ibrahim Abdullahi hinted that the State First Service was the earliest emergency responders.

He revealed that collapsed building that caught the victims when they were in their beds, might have been caused by a landslide occurred.
