The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken leading-edge of innovation in the study of Veterinary medicine, following its accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) ― thirteen years after several unsuccessful attempts in the past.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN made the heartwarming disclosure at a Media briefing ahead of 51st Convocation and 55th Founders’ Day Ceremony scheduled for 23rd to 29 November 2025.
With the successful accreditation, which is complemented by the establishment of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital to meet training needs of students and Veterinary healthcare delivery, the Vice Chancellor said the institution is on the winning side.
Omoregie, listed the acquisition of a brand new tractor for landscaping since 1985, 20 brush cutters, 20 Lawn mowers amongst other achievements recorded since he assumed duty last year.
“I am happy to announce also that the Veterinary Medicine program which had suffered accreditation hiccups for 13 years before I took office, has been successfully accredited by the National Universities Commission, NUC.
“Though it was very hard, but we overcome the challenges for making the accreditation successful.
“This is complemented by a new Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital established by this administration to meet with the training and accreditation need of the Faculty.
“We have acquired 20 Lawnmower for landscaping, 20 Brush cutter Brush cutters as well as purchase of one tractor since 1985”, according to the VC.
Appreciating President Bola Tinubu’s intervention funding to the institution, the Vice Chancellor said Tertiary Education Fund has marked UNIBEN to benefit from the few major simulation Centre of training medical students medical students in Nigeria.
He maintained that several projects have been undertaken through intervention of the federal government, including construction and furnishing of a new Senate building, construction and furnishing of studios for environmental services.
Other projects include, the construction of electrical vehicles charging station, completion and furnishing of Petroleum and Engineering System Research Centre, construction of Optometry Building, construction of modern and sustainable hostel and a host of others.
According to him, out of a total number 14,083 graduands, 198 emerged First Class, 4,217 students bagged Second Class Upper, while 7,9284 students recorded Second Class lower, just as 578 graduands got Third Class honours.
He revealed that total of 1,780 graduands will also be conferred with Higher degrees, including PhD Masters, Post graduate programme and others.
Professor Omoregie stated that under his leadership, students and welfare of staffers have been prioritized through staff training and development, prompt announcement of professorial assessment outcomes, regular staff promotion exercise, prompt payment of staff entitlements and honorarium.
“The University Management has stayed faithful and committed to the welfare of staff by ensuring that staff entitlements are paid promptly. We have carried out series of promotion exercise for the benefits of all qualified staff with prompt announcement of professorial assessment outcomes.
‘We have prioritized staff training and development with most staff benefiting from training grants across all Faculties, Departments and non-academic Units”, the VC said.
