The Abia State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media, alleging the recovery of a bomb or explosive device in Aba.
In a statement issued on Monday, the police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, who described the claims as false and misleading, said thorough investigations carried out through the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area confirmed that no explosive was recovered.
According to the police, the incident that made news headlines was linked to a road reconstruction project being carried out by the Abia State Government.
DSP Chinaka explained that a church structure had encroached on the road under reconstruction and was directed to move back slightly to create space for the project.
She noted that the directive was not complied with, prompting the intervention of military personnel to enforce compliance. During the adjustment process, an iron rod forming part of a pillar of the church structure was removed, which was allegedly mistaken for an explosive device.
“There was nothing resembling a bomb or explosive recovered anywhere in Aba,” the police spokesperson stated.
DSP Chinaka assured residents that the Police, as the lead internal security agency, remain vigilant in safeguarding lives and property across the state. She added that officers of the Command are active, alert, and strategically deployed to maintain law and order.
The Police Command urged members of the public to disregard the false reports and rely on official information from security agencies.
