Tension has gripped residents of Ifon in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State after arsonists protesting over the murder of detainee in police custody set a police station in the locality ablaze.
A source said the victim was arrested in connection with a violent crime involving two suspects, Tolu Osomoguo and Ojo Osomoguo on Valentine’s Day.
The source said the victim was confirmed dead as a alleged torture in custody before he was later admitted in hospital in the State where he died.
Angered by the alleged hide-and-seek by police authorities in providing taking responsibility for the victim’s death, prompted friends of the deceased and his father (name withheld), to hit the street with a protest.
The source also and thereafter mobilized to the police station and set it ablaze after chasing a Divisional Police officer and other personnel on duty away.
Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Olatokunbo Afolabi, has visited the burnt police station and ordered a full scale investigation into the incident.
But, he told journalists that the victim did not die in police custody as purported by his family and assured that normalcy has returned to the locality.
