Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday suspended its peaceful protest held on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway over alleged student loan mismanagement and their inability to access the Federal government’s student Education loan scheme.
Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Command in the State, CSP Omolola Odutola said no incident of violence was reported during the peaceful protest.
She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo had rapport and expressed reassurances that authorities concern will address their concerns.
The NANS leadership backpedal during the advocacy meeting at the Command’s Headquarters, Eleweran in the State, saving the situation from drifting.
The Commissioner, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, engaged the protesters and appealed for calm and urged NANS leadership to reopen the expressway for normal traffic flow.
He also assured the angry students that their concerns would be urgently communicated to relevant authorities.
Earlier, demonstrators barricaded the expressway, causing temporary disruption to vehicular movement.
The protesters decried lack of transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the Government Tertiary Education Trust Fund meant for student loans.
They also decried the rising cost of tuition and called for improvements in learning conditions and facilities across tertiary institutions.
