Monarch suspended for assaulting 72-year-old man

The Ogun State government has suspended Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo from his position for six months for allegedly engaging in conduct unbefitting the status of an Oba.

Ogunjobi, was caught supervising the public assault of a 72-year-old Chief, Areola Abraham —seen prostrating before him after accusing him of treachery in video, which has gone viral on social media.

In the same video, the traditional ruler also used foul languages on the victim, threatening to kill and bury without consequences, while his personal aide slapped the Septuagenarian.

After the incident, the State government, suspended the retired police officer who turned traditional ruler at a meeting with the victim in the State Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The Government said, Kabiyesi has been suspended and stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile-Ifo, pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise regarding the allegations, following investigation conducted on the sad incident.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Command in the State, has launched a discreet investigation into the viral video of physical assault and threat to life.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola who confirmed this in a statement condemns any form of assault, harassment and violence regardless of the individuals involved.

She revealed that both parties reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department Eleweran, and their statements were obtained.

“Given the gravity of the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter, and further assures to adhere to the rule of law and fundamental human rights principles in the instant case.

“The Ogun State Police Command unequivocally condemns any form of assault, harassment and violence regardless of the individuals involved.

“The Command will ensure that justice is served and members of the public will be abreast of relevant updates in due course”, she said.
