The Federal Capital Territory, FCT police have rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby girl after the mother reportedly delivered on a roadside in Kwali Area Council of Abuja.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2026, at about 12:30 a.m., when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on routine patrol discovered the unidentified woman in Kwaita Village, Kwali, shortly after childbirth.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer of FCT Command, Superintendent of Police, SP. Josephine Adeh, the officers immediately alerted the Gender Unit of the Kwali Division, which swiftly mobilised to the scene.
“The mother and her newborn were safely rescued and immediately conveyed to the General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical attention and were subsequently discharged in stable condition,” the statement said.
Following established welfare procedures, the authorities contacted the Officer in Charge of Welfare in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali, who took custody of the mother and child.
They have since been relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they are receiving proper care and support.
Commending the officers for their prompt response, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, praised their professionalism and compassion.
He noted that the patrol team, despite being male personnel, displayed exceptional sensitivity in assisting the distressed woman and ensuring the safety of the newborn before the arrival of the Gender Unit.
