DSS arrests activist over ‘call for military rule’

A human right activist, Marxist Kola Edokpayi has been arrested over an offensive social post in support of Niger military ruler, Ibrahim Traoré who oust President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba in a coup d’état in 2022.

The suspect was said to have called on African youths to resist attempts by international community which had declared interest Africa States under the apron-string of military rule to arrest the 37-year-old Traoré and others after grabbing prominence, saying No to neocolonialism and dictatorship in Africa.

Online trollers are criticizing the action by the secret police, describing it as a threat to free speech with some demanding unconditional release of Edokpayi who is the speaker of citizens led advocacy group, Talakawa Parliament.

It was reported that Edokpayi was whisked from his residence and taken into DSS custody in Benin City by operatives of the Department on Wednesday April 30.

Not a few his compatriots have launched campaign against DSS,
who has yet to disclose reasons behind his detention at its facility in Benin City, the State Capital, without trial over the controversial post, speculated to have stirred hatred online.

Edokpayi came under fire previously when his photograph with embattled Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, hit the internet, calling his integrity along with his followers to question.

The followed Edokpayi’s unrelenting vile press criticism against the federal lawmaker and threat to mobilized his Constituents to recall him from the National Assembly over alleged non-performance.
