BBNaija Phyna sister’s death after road crash avoidable — Sowore

Date:

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist, has lamented the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna.

Otabor’s family announced through a statement by Eko Solicitors & Advocates, saying Ruth passed on to glory on Sunday August 32, at about 6:30 a.m.

Weeks earlier after the graduate of federal Polytechnic, Auchi, suffered a deadly accident involving Dangote truck in Edo State, leading to the amputation of her leg.

In his tribute to the deceased family, shared on his social media accounts, Sunday, Sowore wrote: “A sad moment has struck”.

“A beautiful life has been cut short by the cutthroat and irresponsible corporate conduct of Dangote truck drivers.

“BBNaija’s Phyna has announced the passing of her sister, Ruth Otabor. I commiserate deeply with Phyna and the entire Otabor family over this tragic loss of a brilliant graduate whose future was stolen by the recklessness of a Dangote truck driver.

“This death was not inevitable—it could have been prevented. It could have been avoided if drivers were properly trained, if Nigeria’s terrible roads were fixed, and if after the accident, there had been timely and humane intervention”, he said.

The human rights activist argued, “instead, another family is left grieving, another young life wasted, and another reminder is written in blood that Nigeria continues to fail its people while powerful corporations escape accountability.

“May Ruth’s soul rest in peace, and may her death strengthen the call for justice”, Sowore said.

TheNewspad recalls that Dangote Group had pledged to foot Ruth’s medical bills through its insurance partners by providing full medical and financial support to Ruth after the crash.

The company also pledged financial support to her family while at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital and fly her out of Nigeria to India further medical attention.

But, Nigerians including fierce Cleric, Apostle Suleiman of Omega Fire Ministries, and human rights activists, Phyna and Martins Vincent Otse better known as
‘Very Dark Man’, had dragged Dangote conglomerate on social media when Ruth was hospitalized, while a few others, expressed concerns over attempts by some individuals to cash-out from the crash.

Meanwhile, Dangote Group has condoled the family of Ruth Otabor, via a statement released on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

The company said it had made arrangements to fly Ruth to India for advanced medical treatment, pending clearance from her doctors and highlighted steps the company took prior to her demise.

“On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” Dangote Group said in the statement.
