Deep grief and widespread disbelief have gripped the Aleto community in Eleme, Port Harcourt and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Rivers State.
This followed the sudden death of resident Pastor Deacon Steve Eyo, who passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026 after collapsing mid-sermon while officiating a funeral.
What began as a solemn farewell to a departed community member turned into an unimaginable tragedy when the minister himself slumped just fifteen minutes into a powerful message centered on mortality.
According to witness accounts, Deacon Eyo was delivering a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond.”
During his address, he used a striking market analogy to illustrate the unpredictability of human existence, telling the congregation that death is an inevitable destination for all.
”Some people leave the market early, while others stay until late. In the same way, some people die early, while others live longer,” the cleric reportedly told the grieving crowd, emphasizing that death can strike when least expected.
Moments later, the microphone dropped to the floor with a loud thud as the pastor collapsed. Initial reactions from attendees were filled with confusion, with many assuming his fall was a dramatic live demonstration meant to drive home his point about the suddenness of mortality.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, fellow ministers, church choir members, and medically trained attendees rushed to his aid, administering first aid and prayers.
He was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital in the very ambulance hired for the funeral, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The uncanny nature of the incident has since sparked heavy conversations online, turning into a viral talking point across social media platforms.
Netizens have flooded feeds with shock, philosophical reflection, and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the RCCG community.
Expressing deep shock on X, user @ChidiWrites posted: “This life is truly spiritual and unpredictable.
Preaching about the certainty of death and bowing out 15 minutes later? May God comfort his family and the RCCG community in Eleme. Rest in peace, Deacon Steve.”
Others shared similar feelings of surrealism, with @Aisha_Bello99 noting: “Reading that people initially thought it was a live demonstration gave me cold chills.
So heartbreaking. My deepest condolences go to the Aleto community and his immediate family.”
Medical and public health perspectives also surfaced online. Weighing in on the tragedy, @Dr_Kelechi wrote: “As tragic as this is, it highlights the importance of routine health checks, especially for clerics and public speakers under high stress.
Sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t send warnings. Rest well, pastor.”
On Facebook, community members and fellow clergymen shared emotional tributes.
Elder Kenneth Okoro wrote: “What a heavy blow to the RCCG family in Rivers State.
Deacon Steve Eyo lived and died in active service. May the good Lord grant the church and his family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
Echoing this, Blessing Nnadi shared: “This is so terrifying. Imagine sitting in a funeral and watching the officiating minister drop dead while talking about the exact same thing.
May his soul rest in peace, and may God protect us all.”
Instagram users similarly reflected on the fragility of life. @official_adaora posted: “Chineke! The market analogy he used… hitting very differently right now.
Rest in peace, Pastor. Life is truly short.” Meanwhile, @iam_ceedee added: “This is stuff from movies, but it’s real life. So scary. Prayers up for his family and the Aleto Community.”
As the Aleto Community and the RCCG family mourn this irreplaceable loss, Deacon Eyo’s final words continue to resonate deeply as a stark, unforgettable reminder of the human condition.
