Court remands three security agents in prison for ‘flogging Nigerian’

The Nigeria police Command in Delta State has confirmed the remand order of three accused persons who flogged and humiliated a resident of Emevor Community in Isoko North Local Government Area of the State by a competent court of jurisdiction on Friday.

 

The Command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe disclosed this in a statement, after a viral video depicting the alleged torture of a resident by Emevor Community leader and members of a local vigilante group.

 

Upon the arrest of the accused persons, Upon the conclusion of investigations, the police arrested Lucky Okeremu (48), Chairman of Emevor Community, Okiemute Oyibo (46), and Karo Akamakusi (45) by men of Ozoro Divisional Police, they were charged by the law enforcement agency to court the following day.

 

Edafe said, “The incident, which was captured in a video widely circulated on social media, immediately drew the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, who directed the Area Commander, Ozoro Area Command, to conduct a swift and discreet investigation”.

 

The investigation, which was further reinforced by a petition from concerned human rights activists, established that on 5 July 2026 at about 0815hrs, the suspects, acting in concert with others now at large, unlawfully apprehended the victim and took him to a hotel in Emevor Community.

 

During the encounter, the survivor of the assault, was allegedly subjected to severe humiliation, physically assaulted, inflicted with bodily injuries, and allegedly threatened with death.

 

“The suspects have since been arraigned before a competent court on charges of conspiracy to commit felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, and threatening the life of the victim, contrary to Sections 516, 355, 249(e), and 86 respectively of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C21, Vol. I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006”, according to Edafe who said efforts are on to arrest the remaining suspects still at large.

 

Accordingly, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniy, disclosed that while the police Command recognises the role of community leaders and vigilante groups in supporting security efforts, however, no individual or group has the authority to assault, torture, intimidate, or subject any person to unlawful punishment.

 

He warned that anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be prosecuted in accordance with extant laws in Nigeria.
