Switzerland returns 18 looted Benin artefacts to Nigeria in historic restitution deal

Switzerland has returned 18 looted Benin artefacts and five other Nigerian cultural objects to Nigeria in historic restitution deal that marks another milestone in the global restitution of African heritage.

 

The restitution ceremony, was held on Tuesday in Lagos State, also featured the signing of a bilateral agreement between Nigeria and Switzerland in Lagos.

 

The bilateral agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation in combating the illicit trafficking of cultural property and facilitating future returns.

Hanatu Musa Musawa, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Olugbile Holloway and Dr Alice Hertzog are among officials involved at the ceremony.
