Oba of Benin royal gifts, ‘Ekoko masquerades’ hold subjects together at Igue festival celebration

‘Royal kola nuts’ gifts offered by Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin as an undeniable expression of love that shapes the understanding of Benin history, held his loyal subjects together during the ‘Utue Igue Oba’ traditional rite in the ongoing Igue festival.

Otue Igue Oba ceremony ― is an ancient sacred traditional rite in Oba Palace where Chiefs in order-of-ranking, converge on Oba’s Palace in Benin City, and paid respect, and reaffirm their loyalty to the royal parsonage.

The gesture is expression of love, bond, unity, respect for Benin tradition, and mark of recognition to the beneficiaries. In addition, it reflects a deep insight of African religion and divinity on how Benin people embrace their customs and tradition.

Members of the royal family, notable Chiefs, families, groups guests, including Oredo Local Government Chairmanship aspirant, Mr Osarobo Osaghae, got listed in the roll call of Chiefs got kola nuts gifts ― meant for their Igue worship in their various homes at approved dates, after Igue Oba (indoor) traditional rite billed for Thursday December 18.

The rich cultural heritage of Benin people was in full swing when Ekoko N’ Uteh masquerades, engaged the dancing floor with energetic dances, accompanied by high-spirited chants with deep spiritual connection and effusion of praises in honour of Benin throne, motivated onlookers at the event.

Female members of the cultural troupe were not left behind; while ‘young Ekoko’ also had their moment.

The masquerades also ward-off evil spirits from the land and thereafter proclaimed blessings with their ancestral staff, ahead of a prosperous new year, climaxed their presentation.
