Nigeria’s defence chief Badaru quits― Presidency

Mohammed Badaru, Nigeria’s defence chief, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga said late Monday December 1st.

63-year-old two-term former Governor of Jigawa State, amid President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to consolidate its war against terrorism.

The former minister defence resignation was contained in a letter addressed to President Tinubu and dated December 1, 2025.

Citing health grounds, Onanuga said President Tinubu accepted Abubakar’s resignation and thanked him for his services to the nation.

Badaru was appointed defence minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.

Onanuga said in an interview on Channels television on the day that President Tinubu accepted Abubakar’s resignation and thanked him for his services to the nation.

The President may inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor within the week, according to sources.

In the meantime, General Christopher Musa has been tipped as the likely successor of Abubakar.
