A Benin-based fairly used electronic dealer (name withheld), has reportedly committed suicide after running up debts to the tune of N1 million — loan facility he obtained from one of the new generation Banks.
The victim who
had several problems, including those associated with mental health arising from pressure from his home, according to sources, died after drinking a poisonous substance at undisclosed location last week Wednesday.
The businessman, believed to be in his 50’s, hails from South Eastern part of Nigeria, hired shop 24 house no. 2, Lawani Close, off Holy Cross road, New Benin in Oredo LGA where had struggled to deal with creditors that had chased him severally during debt recovery.
It was learnt that after the death of the businessman, a trader in the area, recalled his last encounter with the departed electronic dealer after Bank Executives accosted him at his shop, 24, hours before tragedy struck.
His debtors was said to have requested the Bank staff who has threatened to arrest and prosecute him over alleged default in the repayment plan.
One of his neighbours who craved for anonymity, told TheNewspad reporter that the debtor, aside being indebted to a Bank, he was being unable to pay his store rent. All of these challenges might have contributed to the pressure that killed him.
“We noticed that he began to experience palpitation on his heart and sweat were coming out of his body. Men don’t cry, they bottle up their emotions. And there is nothing that kills faster than when you can’t express yourself.
“We had to give him a chair to sit down. After much arguments, the Bank people then resolve to come the following day.
“We didn’t know that he was goin to die. He is even owing his landlord store rent for months. As you can see, his shop remains locked”, he said.
TheNewspad reports that traders at Lawani Close, Mission road, and adjoining streets in the area, shut down their shops to observe a mourning ritual in honour their departed colleague on Friday August 29th 2025.
Crestfallen family members of the deceased are reeling from the death of the businessman, which left many residents, including electronic buyers and others wanting to carryout repairs of their devices, stranded for hours.
