The police Command in Benue State, has confirmed the alleged murder of a top police officer, SP. Mamud Abubakar.

Suspected bandits had earlier laid siege to Makurdi – Naka road, which is within the jurisdiction of Abubakar who was the Division Police officer, Naka, earlier on Tuesday.

Circumstances surrounding the tragedy, remain sketchy as at the time of filing this report.

But security sources said the gallant police officer was killed in gun battle with bandits.

Spokesperson for Benue State Command, SP. Catherine Anene confirmed the incident.

She promised to provide details.

“Death of the DPO Naka confirmed. Details will follow soon please”, SP..Anene said.

SP. Abubakar had served as DPO, North Bank Division Area in the State, before his attack and death.

A journalist based in Benue State in a tribute, described the late SP. Abubakar as “a fine gentleman with full of gallantry skills”.

He wrote: “This is sad! the man was a fine gentleman with full of gallantry skills.

“He (Abubakar) was tireless in fighting crime,we were friends right from when he was DPO in North Bank.
“May his gentle soul rest in peace”.
