LAPO unveils winners of Science competition, states strengthen ties

Lift Above Poverty (LAPO) has announced the winners of the 2022 Science quiz competition for Secondary schools in Edo and Delta States at the weekend.

University Preparatory Secondary School emerged the winner in all categories after polling 60 points, while Presentation National High School came second with 45 points at the grand finale of the competition.

AB Education centre, polled 55 points to clinch the third position, while Peniel Academy scored 50 points to settle for the fourth best school, after a tie of 40 points between the two schools, was settled with another round of questions.

In his opening address, the Executive Director LAPO, Dr. Honestus Obadiora, said the gesture was geared towards supporting Science Education and enhancing the understanding of science subjects, current affairs as well as to help broaden the knowledge base of students and teachers alike through the annual quiz competition in Nigeria.

He stated that six Secondary schools emerged from the over 375 students who participated in the three senatorial districts in Edo and Delta States respectively.

Also, the Delta State Government has pledged partnership with Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) towards sustaining the gains in development of Science Education.The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Mrs Rose Ezewu, represented by Mrs Hope Igunbor, Director Science Education, said the initiative with interest in science education was capable of promoting the understanding of Science subjects, while providing equitable platform for teachers and students to exchange ideas.

She noted that education remains an instrument of economic empowerment and bedrock of national development which requires the collaborative efforts of every Stakeholders including governments at all levels.

Her counterpart in Edo State, Dr Joan Oviawe who spoke through the Secretary Post Primary Education Board, Mr. Osawe Osagie, commended LAPO Microfinance Bank for the initiative, which is aimed at promoting intellectual development in Science Education among Secondary school students and inculcating a sense of competitive spirit and discipline in students.

Branded instructional materials and Science Laboratory Equipment for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, running into millions of Naira were given the 3 wining schools by the sponsor of the competition that started in 2006.
