Comrade Serah Igunbor, has emerged chairman of the transition Management Committee of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter.
Igunbor, an appointee of governor Godwin Obaseki, is expected to conduct election into vacant positions of the group, which has been embroiled in leadership crisis, ahead of the poll in 2023.
But, the NYCN state secretariat on Akpakpava road in Benin City, was shut down at the weekend by the Government over leadership tussle.
Mr. Andrew Adaze Emwanta, the State Commissioner for Youth and Gender Issues confirmed the shutting down of the secretariat in a public announcement.
Accordingly, Emwanta stated that “Security agencies in the state have been informed of this decision and have the mandate to apprehend any person or group who volunteer to violate this directive of government”.
The Government recalled “A meeting of all critical stakeholders in Youth Council Affairs in the State with the deputy Governor will hold early next week.
“The warring factions must continue to maintain the peace during this period of transition, as the state Government remains committed in promoting the welfare and social inclusiveness of all youths in the State.
The Commissioner who inaugurated the Transition Committee, emphasized that “the role of the Ministry is to supervise the activities of the Youth body and when it now becomes necessary if there is a break down of law and order, we have to intervene”.
Recall that the State Government had in May 2021, postponed election into the State National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) indefinitely over alleged fictionalisation of the body.
A dependable source blamed the Government’s refusal to bulge on a splinter group that enjoys the support of the main opposition party in the State, emerged.
