The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has invited lecturers in University of Benin (UNIBEN) to its Secretariat on Ugbowo Campus for necessary documentation.
Dr Sammydavies Osagie-Eweka, CONUA UNIBEN branch Chairman in a statement, explained that the regularisation of the various platforms that would make them eligible to receive outstanding seven months salary arrears from the federal government during the period of strike declared by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The statement urged CONUA members to provide the necessary information including names, Departments, UBS Personal Information number and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) number from Monday 10th October, 2022.
Part of the statement read: “The vision of CONUA is to see that every Academic prospers with continuous improvement in welfare (and not endless struggles that do not significantly impact on welfare). This we believe can be achieved by respect and constructive engagements with our employer and university management.
“Be informed that our employer is perfecting the IPPIS platform to accommodate our academic allowances and other increments.
“Also, our unpaid 7 months salaries because of our striking asuu colleagues will be paid. To facilitate the payment therefore, all members are to visit the Secretariat for documentation, write names, Dept, UBS number and IPPIS number from Monday 10th October, 2022. God bless CONUA! God bless UNIBEN.
But, sources close to ASUU, described the move by CONUA as a ferry tale by an amorphous and attention-seeking group of jesters.
Recall that ASUU has being on strike since February 14, 2022 over alleged failure of the federal government to implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement, request to deploy University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace existing Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and other issues of concern.
