President Muhammadu Buhari has confessed that he is very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system in Nigeria.
Buhari said this his address to mark Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day on October 1st, barely 48 hours the leadership of Union of Universities (ASUU) said there is nothing to celebrate in the Independence anniversary.
He also urged the striking lecturers on the platform ASUU to return to the classroom.
The President, assured them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available.
He noted that his administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years.
“I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available. This administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years”, he said.
Recall that lecturers in public Universities in Nigeria had down tools over the failure of the federal government to implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement, request to deploy University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) enrolment (IPPIS) and other issues of concern.
