Morocco thwarts Falcons’ dream at 10th WAFCON championship

Morocco on Monday, dashed the hopes of Nigeria’s Super Falcons of progressing to the final stage in the ongoing WAFCON tournament in Rabat.

Nigeria team lost the battle for 10th AFCON final championship to the Atlas Lionesses at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium packed with 42,500 fans at the stadium in penalties after 1-1.

The Super Falcons drag the game into extra-time and penalties due sheer resilience despite losing two key players, Halimatu Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade.

The duo was sent off in the second half to red card offences after video assistant referee (VAR) review adjudged both players to have been culpable for dangerous tackles, the team held

Nigeria will meet Zambia in a third place match on Friday while both South Africa and Morocco will battle for supremacy in the final on Saturday for a chance to win a maiden WAFCON title.

The outcome of Monday match, makes it the third time team will not feature in a WAFCON final since its inception.

In addition, Nigeria played the third and fourth place finished in 2008 and 2012 respectively, and Equatorial Guinea the eventual winners on two other occasions in the past.
