Nigerians have expressed concern over the whereabouts of the minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola hibernation after terrorists invaded the Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Kuje, Abuja and freed over 600 inmates in the early hours of Wednesday.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had visited the scene of crime on his way to Dakar, Senegal. In addition, the minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi and the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Interior had also visited the scene after the invasion of the facility by the members outlawed group.
But, Mr. Sola Fasure, media Adviser to the minister of Interior, said Aregbesola was outside Nigeria when the the attack occurred.
Fasure made the clarification on Thursday NTA Good morning Nigeria interview where he assured that appreciable progress been made to track down fleeing inmates from the Custodial Centre.
When asked about the whereabouts of the minister of Interior, Fasure said, “The minister is not in Nigeria. He went for an official function outside the Country when the incident happen. He cut short his schedule. I am sure that in the next couple of hours, he will be landing in Nigeria.
“Let me first of all just make this clarification. The minister of Interior is being supervising over four agencies in the ministry. The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) as well as the Controller General of NCS.
Fasure revealed that the minister has cut short his trip abroad and he is billed to return any moment over the unfortunate incident, which Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) had claimed responsibility for.
The special Adviser explained that the minister is not appointed to do the day to day running of the ministry of Interior, but, take responsibility for the policy decision in the interior ministry.
According to him, Of course when an unfortunate situation like this happen, the ministry will work work very well with the affected agency and other agencies including intelligence agencies on the way forward.
“As we speak, security personnel have being combing the adjourning areas and that is why they have been retrieve some of the escaped prisoners. Our security men are st work. They are using helicopter and other technologies available to them.
“We want to bring back all the perpetrators that escape and arrest the perpetrators and make them to face justice”, Fasure said.
