The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has asked for compulsory drug test youth corps members as drug demand reduction efforts of the anti-narcotic agency.
It said the test should be conducted as the corps report for their mandatory one year national service at the various orientation camps across Nigeria.
The Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa made the call when he hosted the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Fadah who led his management team on a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
The spokesman of the agency in a Press statement, said Marwa painted a picture of Nigeria’s drug problem with facts and figures from the 2018 national drug survey and called for collective efforts to reverse the trends.
The NDLEA boss sued for increase in manpower to bridge deficit in the counselling centres in the Primary Healthcare Centres nationwide.
“We need counselling centres in the primary healthcare centres at the grassroots, where we don’t have enough manpower to cover and this is where the young men and women of NYSC come in.
“We can train them in their numbers to serve as Counsellors at the grassroots level because majority of drug users only need counselling”, according to him.
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Fadah who led his Management team on the visit, commended NDLEA for the support in the past and collaboration as NYSC prepares to open its orientation camps across the Country.
