NAF halts parade as police confirm four deaths in Kano explosion

The Nigerian Air Force has shifted its 2022 Celebration slated to hold on Thursday in Kano State over “unforseen circumstances”.

This followed a fatal gas explosion that ripped through a crowded area in Sabon Gari in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano on Tuesday morning.

But the spokesman of the NAF, Edward Gabkwet, who announced this in a statement issued in Abuja, said, Celebration now hold on Saturday in the State over the explosion, which claimed four lives and unspecified number of persons are yet-to-be accounted for.

Gabkwet who did not give any reason for the postponement, said in a statement said, “With the recent explosion in Sabon Gari in Kano, the venue of our 2022 Celebration”.

“We need to refortify and strengthen the security of the area before we commence the programme to avoid any unwarranted circumstances.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Day 2022 Celebration earlier scheduled to take place from 19-21 May 2022 at NAF Base, Kano has now been rescheduled to take place from 21- 23 May 2022 at the same venue.

“This was due to unforseen circumstances. The NAF wishes to apologise to all its invited guests for the inconveniences the new shift in date may have caused them”, according to the official.

Police operatives from Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) Department have condoned off the scene of explosion.

The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, confirmed that four persons died in the explosion while security personnel are trying to find the remaining victims of the incident.

He clarified that, “It is not bomb explosion; it’s a gas cylinder. There’s a gas welder here and he was the first victim of the situation.”

“As at now, one female and three males have been killed. All the security agencies are here. The Civil Defence, Brigade Cmmander, Air force, myself and the director, DSS, are all on ground.

“We will extend our investigation and at the end of the day we will come out with exactly what happened”, he CP said.
