The Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City has ordered the shutting down of the institution indefinitely.
It therefore issued 48 hours notice to students to vacate its Campuses.
The decision is due the extension of the eight week strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which began on February 13, 2022.
The Registrar of the University, Mr. Ademola Bobola in a circular issued on Tuesday, said the decision was taken “after due consultation with the Management of the University of Benin,the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of Senate”.
The statement enjoined the students to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast of the school’s eventual re-opening.
The University also wish the students safe journey to their respective destinations.
“Following the extension of the four week strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities,ASUU, and after due consultation with the Management of the University of Benin,the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of Senate, is closing down the University until further notice.
“The action has become expedient as there is no justifiable reason for students to continue to stay on campus when lectures and other academic activities are not going on.
“Consequently, students are to vacate the hostels within fourty-eight (48)hours of this notice. They are enjoined to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast of the school’s eventual re-opening”, the Registrar said.
Investigation however revealed that some students of the institution were allegedly engaging in social vices.
The development prompted the Management of the University to order the closure of the institution indefinitely.
According to a source, “The most of the students were asked to leave Campus because of the unpleasant reports of social vices amongst students within and outside the Campuses”.
