‘N31m fraud’: EFCC refuses custody of ex-aide to Benin monarch

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has declined the request by Mr. Roland Omo Ogbebor otherwise known as ‘Odionwere Omuada’ to remain n its custody, pending his bail application before the Court.

Omo Ogbebor, the former sceptre bearer to Benin monarch was arraigned by EFCC on Wednesday before a federal High court, Benin Division for allegedly used his position to swindle two persons the sum of N31, 000, 000, 000. (Thirty-one million Naira).

He was also alleged to have collected the sum of Eighteen million Naira from a victim under the pretext of transferring a plot of land measuring 200 feet by 200 feet for him in Okhuoromi Community in April 2020.

Addressing the court on Wednesday, Chief Michael Ukpebor to the defendant (Omo Ogbebor) informed the court that he has a pending bail application before the Court and pleaded with the Court to allow his Client remain in the custody of the EFCC.

Responding, the EFCC Counsel told the Court that the Commission has no space to accommodate the defendant haven concluded investigation.

But the trial judge, Justice S. M Shuaibu after listening to the submission of the prosecution and Omo Ogbebor’s Counsel, remanded the defendant in the custody of the Correctional Centre and thereafter adjourned the hearing of the bail application to March 8, 2022.

Our Correspondent reports that there was a jubilation after the pronouncement by the judge; Just as the guards of the Nigerian Correctional handcuffed the defendant who was banished from the palace of the Oba of Benin last year, and took him away.
