A Commander of the Anambra Vigilance Group, AVG has been arrested and detained for alleged torture of a female police officer.

Policr said the crime took place in the Commander’s office in Awuda Nnobi in Idemili South Local Government Area on Jan. 12.

Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Anambra State Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement on Saturday, said the suspect is in police custody.

Ikenga however did not disclosed the name of the Vigilante Commander after a video went viral showing the apparent torture of the female police officer by the Commander.

The development prompted the Commissioner Police in Anambra, CP Echeng Echeng to order the arrest of the Commander and investigation of the incident.

“The police described the act as cowardly and said that the command is always ready to protect women against violence even if the person is not part of the security Community,” according to the statement.

The police spokesman thanked members of the public, especially residents of the state, for condemning the act.

He assured that the police Command under CP Echeng’s
watch will not tolerate human rights abuse of any kind.
