We can’t find UNIBEN student who accused lecturer of rape — VC

The management of University of Benin (UNIBEN), has described as pathetic the alleged hide-and-seek by a female student who accused Mr. Bode Akundayo of rape on the school’s Campus.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, expressed apprehension over the disappearance of the female student at an interactive session with journalists.

Mr. Akundayo, a lecturer in the Department of English and Literature, Mr. Bode Akundayo after the incident on October 5, 2021 after a viral video purportedly recorded when the lecturer was begging for forgiveness, provoked a wave of backlash on social media.

But the spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP. Kotongs Bello, said the accused lecturer, Mr. Ekundayo has being on-the-run while the female student who accused him of rape, made a statement with police.

Kotongs who disclosed this in a previous interview said, “The man is on the run. It is only the complainant that came to make her statement with us.

“Since then the man has not shown up. The school said that they have directed the Department to produce him”, the police spokesman said.

Speaking further, the UNIBEN VC, condemned the behaviour of the lecturer, which led to his interdiction, pending the outcome of police investigation

Prof. Salami demanded for a thorough investigation into the incident.

She said, “A man who was accused of rape, I wasn’t there, neither was any member of Staff nor any management person was there. It was the same complainant who called that she needed to be rescued.

“Now, it is pathetic for us to say that we cannot find her. She had enough time to report to the security offices on Campus. And I am sure even the police interrogated this same girl. I am not going farther than that. But I am very sure.
