Two unidentified traders have reportedly lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion at Lafenwa market in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.

The victims (mother and Child) were trapped in their shop after the petrol tanker fell and spilled its content on Sunday morning.

Eight other persons got injured during the pandemonium triggered by the inferno that consumed stock worth millions of Naira.

Multiple reports say, the trader and her daughter who were said to have arrived early for early activities were burnt beyond recognition when a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) upturned at about 4.45 am.

The vehicle fell making its way inbound Rounder area from Oju-Irin, Lafenwa when the tragedy occurred, according to the spokesman of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE),Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi.

He blamed the death on the uncooperative attitude of people around the axis through scooping of fuel and other unwholesome act which sparked off the fire.

Akinbiyi in a statement on Sunday, added that “The earlier reported tanker laden with fuel which overturned while making its way inbound Rounder from Oju-Irin, Lafenwa, is now engulfed in fire due to the uncooperative attitude of people around the axis through scooping of fuel and other unwholesome act which sparked off the fire.

“The general public is advised to vacate the vicinity, while TRACE, police, FRSC, Fire Service and other first responders resolve the latest emergency”, according to Akinbiyi.

A witness said, “There was a spark that triggered the fire. So, what we had to do was to condone off the place. First to ensure that hoodlums do not take advantage of the situation.

“They (Mother and daughter) were trapped inside their shops. I deployed my men to the scene of the fire”, the witness said.

Recall that a tanker exploded at the Ogere end of the Lagos-Ibadan, leaving four casualties and loss of property 12 days.
