Buhari commends UNIBEN for growth, development at 50


President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday hailed the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in the advancement of education and contribution to the social economic development of Nigeria over the past five decades.

He disclosed this at the conferment of higher degrees at the 46th and 47th combined Convocation Ceremony of the University of Benin, Edo State.

Dr. (Mrs.) Ruqayyatu Gambo-Iliasu from the federal ministry of Education represented the president who is the visitor to the institution.

Buhari revealed that the federal government has not relented in finding solutions to the myriads of challenges facing Nigerian Universities as well the nation’s education sector, adding that efforts are being made to address them.

“Finally, I commend the commitment of the University of Benin Community, to the growth and development and by extension, Nigeria economy. Your service to our fatherland is greatly valued. I therefore charge you to place the overall interest of the University above tribal and personal interest and to strive at all times to justify the investment of government in this regard in this institution”.

The Convocation came “at a time like this when the federal government is grappling with socio-polical and economic challenges, it is important that I reiterate this, that the federal government is committed to finding solutions to the challenges that are confronting education sector in Nigeria.

“Our youths must be prepared to contribute their quota by creative and innovative venture” through a collective ability to overcome the challenges.

According to him, “The federal government is aware of the deficit in finding and infrastructure, however, concerted efforts are being made to improve the current condition.

Buhari assured that government will continue the full implementation of the budgetary provisions in the education sub-sector, adding that “Education is the bedrock of national development”.

“We must commend UNIBEN management for taking up the onerous task of redirecting our students on the path of moral rectitude, moral formation and the respect for constituted authorities”, according to the president.

In a remark, the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki described the University of Benin as a worthy partner education development and assured that his government is irrevocably committed towards meeting its obligation to the State.

On their part, the Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. James Ayatse and the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Lilian Salami, highlighted the achievements of the University and extolled the sterling qualities of the five prominent persons that were honorary awardees of the institution.

The awardees include the Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund and Reproductive /Public Health Expert; Dr. Natalia kanem and Dr. Thomas Iluobe — Chairman, British Rugby Football Union.

Others are Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former Governor of Edo State, Mr. Oluwakemi Pinheiro (SAN), former minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma as Prof. Godwin Osayuku Oshodin, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin who was conferred with Professor Emeritus.
