Benin monarch bans protest during festival, announces restrictions


The Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II has banned daily protests by individuals and Villages to his palace during Igue Festival also known as ‘Ugue festival’ in December 2021.

He however restricted individuals and groups who have complaints to Tuesday and Thursday at the palace in Benin City, Edo State.

Mr. Frank Irabor, the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, BTC disclosed this in a public announcement on Friday.

According to the announcement, “The Oba of Benin has instructed that henceforth, those who have complaints and would want to protest to the palace, should do so either on Tuesday or Thursday. Protest to the palace on daily basis by individuals and Villages will no longer be entertained except on Tuesday and Thursday as earlier stated.

“Furthermore, the general public is reminded that in the month of December, the palace performs the annual Ugie Festival. Consequently, the palace will no longer entertain any protest during the month of December 2021”, according to the monarch.
