Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa, PAACA, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to watch out for saboteurs who may collude with officials of the Commission to subvert Anambra State Governorship election slated for Saturday November 6, 2021.
The Executive Director of PAACA, Ezenwa Nwagwu raised the red flag when he recently featured on NTA’s Good morning Nigeria programme where he enjoined election administrators and stakeholders including politicians and Candidates of the various political parties for democracy to work.
According to Nwagwu, “My worry for election in Nigeria has not been without attempts at improving elections, but I am more worried about the attitude of politicians, their Candidates and Community exposed persons in the Communities who walk in tandem with INEC Officials to even subvert their own processes. If we pay attention in that area, when we do Bimodal, or whatever system we put in place that guarantee guarantee the sanctity of the ballot will be there.
“Sometimes when you call the Information Communication Technology, ICT persons and of they do not come or respond in time, what will happen?. Then you create an emergency. And when you create an emergency, then, you allow for somebody to take a decision. Once that emergency is created, the voters starts piling pressures, often times they now say, please let us do it. Once they agree, that is the end of the matter.
“If this situation occur at many polling units, you already have a challenge…This is coming from a field practical experience. It is the root of the challenges that we face. The administrators and technicians are doing their best, but our politicians and the Candidates are not singing from the same hymn book. We need to get them to do that.
“INEC everyday sits down and thinking about how to improve elections. It got to a point where INEC started the peoples results – Form E60, paste it, made it compulsory that once you finish the polling unit, paste this results on the wall such that people can snap, take it. Yet, political parties that has more than party interest in the electoral process, can even have a polling unit by polling unit result if they have party agents.
“But what was the experience. You had some INEC officials who were not lasting those results. Even when it was something that INEC had agreed that would improve the system. If you are a party agent, if you paste that result, you just snap…Officials subverted those things in many places”, Nwagwu said.
