12 Clubs battle as Betsy Obaseki women football tourney kicks-off

12 Football Clubs comprising eight Nigerian Premiership Clubs and four Championship Clubs are set for a mission to test their competencies at the maiden Edition of Betsy Obaseki Women Football tournament, BOWFT.

Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, Edo State First Lady declared the Ceremony opened at 6: 56p.m on Monday September 27, 2021 at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City ahead of the closing Ceremony on October 3, 2021.

Edo Queens Football Club (FC) in Edo State and Niaja Ratels (FC), Abuja are slugging it out at the Ceremony which was heralded with glitz and glamour as well as parade of the participating Clubs with their officials to the delight of sports enthusiasts.

Mrs. Betsy Obaseki and wife of the State deputy governor, Mrs. Mariam Shaibu, thereafter filed out during pre-match Ceremony in company of Nigeria football legend, Mr. Daniel Omokachi also known as the Bull’ who represented Nigeria’s minister of sports, Sunday Dare and Mrs. Omidiran for the Ceremonial handshake with the two players and their officials at the field of play.

During the pre-match session, Mrs. Obaseki took the Ceremonial kick at 7:54, p.m, which paved the way for the opening match between Edo Queens FC and Niger Ratens FC.

Yetunde Balogum, grand daughter of the late Nigerian football icon, Teslim Balogun of Niger Ratens FC took the first kick of the match at 7:55p.m.

The draws of the tournament tagged “Promoting the girl Child”, was held on Sunday evening after the players and officials had undergone Covid-19 test.

Our Correspondent reports that the tournament is private sector-driven initiative of the State government across three venues. They are Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, University of Benin (UNIBEN) sports Complex and Western Boys High school mini stadium.

Prizes for the participating Clubs at the tournament, aimed at promoting Women football Development, is yet to be announced.

Other participating Clubs are Rivers Angels (River), Bayelsa Queens FC (Bayelsa), Robo FC, Mushin (Lagos), Heartland FC, Owerri (Imo) and Confluence Queens FC in Lokoja (Kogi) States.

Royal Queens FC, Warri (Delta), Sunshine Queens FC, Akure (Ondo), Fortress International FC Rolling Football Club and Kaduna FC in (Kaduna) States were also listed in the ongoing tournament.

As at the time of filing this report, the fist goal from Edo Queens FC at the ongoing tournament, was scored by Glory Osaghae after 37 minutes and 19 seconds into the first half.
