A bookseller, Moses Adamu has been shot dead by a policeman attached to the anti-kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit of Edo State police Command.
The victim, according to police authority, was trying to arrest a murder suspect when the suspected murderer fired a shot to restrain the fleeing suspect on Friday afternoon at First East Circular road by St. Joseph Catholic church in Benin City.
The law bookseller at the Edo State High court Complex in Benin City, drove into Benin City from Lagos to attend his sister’s wedding billed for September 18, 2021 when he was hot by a stray bullet by a policeman.
The spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP Kotongs Bello, said the police operatives were trying to arrest a murder suspect when the Cop fired a shot to restrain the fleeing suspect at First East Circular road by St. Joseph Catholic church in Benin City when the tragedy occurred.
Kotongs who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday stated that the gunshot, unfortunately, hit the thigh of one of the passengers in a moving vehicle.
He revealed that the victim was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital in Benin City where the injured victim later died.
The spokesman said the alleged killer Cop has been identified and taken into custody for further for trial.
“The bullet unfortunately hit one of the occupants of a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam. He was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital where he gave up the ghost.
“The erring officer will go through administrative trial that will determine his culpability”, according to the statement.
In the meantime, the Chairmen of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Benin branch, has condemns the unprovoked alleged extrajudicial killing.
Members of the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme (PDSS) who monitored the situation alleged that the deceased before his death was with his friends in a vehicle driving from his tailor’s shop to pick his cloths in preparation for his sister’s wedding when a vehicle with a tinted glass overtook them while a man with a pistol (not dressed in police uniform) alighted from the vehicle.
According to a statement released by the NBA, “The late Moses and his friends not sure of their identity tried to escape thinking they were kidnappers. In the process, the occupants of the tinted glass vehicle opened fire on them unprovoked.
“They shot at the back tire of the vehicle (up to five times) and shot at the passenger’s front door which bullets hit Mr. Moses Adamu on his right thigh. Mr. Moses Adamu’s friends made efforts to take him to Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City where he was received at the emergency ward at about 4:55 pm for treatment but at that time he had lost so much blood.
“Some of his friends volunteered to donate some pints of blood to help out but unfortunately at about 8: 44 p.m, Mr. Moses became unconscious after a while he gave up the ghost”, the statement said.
The statement further revealed that the Chairman of NBA, Benin branch, Mr. Pius Oiwoh was contacted by the family of the deceased and he resourcefully assisted them by making the necessary calls to the high ranking officers and other security stakeholders.
