Security guards killed, inmates escape in Kogi prison jailbreak


Unspecified number of security guards including soldiers have been reportedly killed in a gun duel during Kogi Medium prison jailbreak in Kogi State.

Recall that a similar attack occurred at the facility in the State where about 294 inmates in custody, out of which 224 were pre-trial detainees and 70 convicted inmates.

The Medium Security Custodial Centre of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Kabba came under attack at about 11:35p.m on Sunday night by suspected bandits who freed over 200 inmates.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Francis Enobore, confirmed statement on Monday.

He that a recapture procedure has commenced as investigations were ongoing and rearrest the fleeing inmates.

Multiples sources said some soldiers were killed, but he could not immediately confirm the actual figure.

“They overpowered soldiers at a military checkpoint close to the correctional centre, and that gave them access to the facility,” he said, also confirming that bandits were part of the inmates.

“The attackers in their number were said to have arrived at the Custodial Centre heavily armed and immediately engaged the armed guards in a fierce gun battle”, according to sources.
