One person has been reported wounded in connection with a recent clash between Christians and traditional worshippers in a clash in Benin City, Edo State Capital.
It was gathered that some Christians had converged on the King square beside Urhokpota traditional during a Christian Thursday morning solemn Assembly when a traditional worshipper strayed into the arena and began to make chants.
While the Christians invoked a chant ‘Jesus’, the woman dressed in flowing red gown, made incantations in the ensuring melee which attracted a crowd.
It was gathered that the alleged refusal to yield the podium for the the Christian adherents who arrived the venue first, heightened tension, prompting a Pastor who wore red shirt atop black tracksuit with a pair of black canvass and a cap to descend on one of the traditionalists with kicks, repeatedly.
Worried by the physical attack on the woman, some bystanders in Benin City, have demanded for the arrest and prosecution of the preacher responsible for the assault.
Okhuelegbe Benedict said, “They need to arrest that man. Why beating the lady? Use holy ghost fire on her”, while Ernest Afo Aisha said, “The man that beat that woman need to arrested”.
Mr. Eve Iyke, called on the law enforcement agency to fish out those who conspired to attack the unarmed woman.
A public affairs commentator, Mr. George Oaku, condemned the attack and frowned at attempts by some religious adherents to convert the King square to a worship centre for pecuniary gains.
“The woman didn’t trespass. This matter must be taken up by the Police, the members of the Church that violated the woman’s rights and assaulted her must be arrested.
“The Pastor must explain why he constituted public nuisance at the Ring road. The name of the Church must be revealed, the woman has right to the place more than the Church. The Pastor went there to maximise tithes and offering collections from the Public”, he declared.
Humphrey Ifeanyi Ochei: This is not what Jesus called us to do, you have ended up beating the flesh of the poor woman and had not helped delivered her from that evil spirit working in her. You have not yet reconciled her to God as instructed in 2 Corinthians Chapter 5:17 – end of the Chapter in the Bible. We have a ministry as believers to reconcile men unto God by showing them the way of salvation and by the Holy Ghost. Not by beating her up. This is wrong!”.
According to Mr. Michael Ebalu, “They should pray for her not to beat her as a Christian you don’t need it leaves judgement for God”.
