UNIBEN shuts gate as ‘cultists, Vigilante’ exchange gunshots

A violent clash between local Vigilante and suspected cultists in Sunday night in Ekosodin Community has heightened tension around Ugbowo Campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The development prompted the security personnel in the University to temporarily shut the exit gate of the institution that leads to Ekosodin Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State in a bid to avert invasion by rampaging members of the brotherhood.

Recall that over 65 percent of UNIBEN undergraduates live outside the Campuses due to shortage of hostel accommodation.

No casualty has been recorded in connection with the pandemonium.

Several students who live outside the Campus were made to trek a long distance while a few others missed on Monday morning lectures.

Security sources members of Vigilante in Ekosodin Community had barred movement of vehicles and motorcycles in and outside the Community in a bid to curb suspicious movement for effective surveillance.

In response to the alleged security breach around the main Campus, security personnel had been deployed to the area.

A top Management Staff of University of Benin who spoke to our Correspondent, said, “the University is not under siege as being peddled by conspiracy theorists on the social Media”.
