Nigerian students target N5m, undertake study into ‘Esama’s history’


Over 150 students drawn from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across Nigeria have began a study into Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion’s history titled, “The contributions of the Esama of Benin to the sociopolitical and economic development of Nigeria”.


The shortlisted students sat for National Essay Competition 2021 held at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City on Saturday out of 1000 Candidates that applied online for the exercise, in honour of Igbinedion who will be 87 years on September 11, 2021.

Professors from seven Nigerian Universities including Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, University of Lagos, UNILAG, University of Ibadan, UI, University of Benin, UNIBEN, Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Edo State and Igbinedion University, Okada, IUO, are expected to engender academic integrity is enshrined into the various categories in the competition.

Briefing journalists on the essence of the Essay Competition, Prof. Nnamdi Nwondu, chairman of the assessment panel, said winners would emerge before on Monday August 30, 2021.

He revealed that the winner at the tertiary category will get N1 million reward while the first and second runner up will get N500,000 and N250,000 respectively.

The Secondary schools prize winner will get N500,000 while the first runner up and Second runner up will get N250,000 and N150,000 respectively.

Winner in the primary category will be rewarded with N300,000 while the first runner up and second runner up will get N150,000 and N100,000 each.

“We have a little above 150 Candidates from different locations that are participating in the Essay competition.

“Our business is to ensure that those who have taken the examinations are properly assessed to be able to get the best”, Nwondu said.

Our Correspondent reports that the registration of participants from the three Categories, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels, was done in strict adherence to Covid-19 protocol before the examination began at about 10:a.m.

Addressing parents and participants at the end of the peaceful exercise, the deputy Chairman and Co-Chairman of Igbinedion Education Centre, Lady, commended the team of assessors and the students who partook in the exercise.

She assured that the process of selecting the winners would be credible and transparent, adding that better deal lie ahead in the days ahead.

One of the students who travelled from Zaria in Kaduna State to participate in the exercise, Master Nathaniel Zakeri, said the academic exercise offered him an opportunity to showcase his talent while Master Kolapo Daniel, expressed hope that he would emerge winner.
