Benin monarch urges IGP to prioritise welfare of personnel


The Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare has urged the Inspector-General of police, Mr Usman Akali Baba to prioritise the welfare of Nigeria police personnel.

The Royal father disclosed this when the police boss led top officers on a familiarization tour to his palace on Tuesday in Benin city, Edo State Capital.

He identified lack of accommodation, poor remuneration and non availability of modern equipment as counter productive to the operations of the force.

He implored the IGP to deploy high technological equipment in cracking down criminals instead of relying on old system.

Oba Ewuare assured his guests that that the Benin throne is determined to support the police to eradicate crimes in Nigeria.

Earlier the Inspector-General of police, Mr Usman Akali Baba told the monarch that he was in Benin on a familiarization tour to boost the morale of officers and men of the force

He further solicited for royal prayers and blessings and pledged his determination in preventing and fighting crime.

Addressing officers and men at Edo State police headquarters on Tuesday in Benin City, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baba Alkali Usman, appealed to police personnel to keep their hope alive over proposed review of salaries saying though delayed but it would materialised.

He said the officers and men of the force while taking their job of protecting lives and property of citizens seriously, their welfare also must not be undermined.

“I want you to take your job very seriously because we are going to work hard to improve on our welfare.

“We are living witness that the Commander in Chief of Armed Forces has graciously asked the salary of the police be reviewed even though it is taking time, it will certainly come.

“Don’t be discouraged it is going to happen”, he said.

Usman further urged the officers to take advantage of any training courses available to improve on themselves adding that a well trained officer is an asset not only to himself but to the nation at large.

“A well trained police officer is an asset to the force, it is an asset to himself, it is an asset to the whole community.

“I congratulate you for having that facilities which will also be used by other security agencies

“Don’t hesitate to go on course when you have to go on course. It will always add value to your life, in terms of knowledge and in terms of professionalism”, he said.
