Tricycle operator arrested for raping undergraduate seeks forgiveness


A commercial tricycle operator, better known as Keke NAPEP, Mr Akpan Confidence, has been arrested for allegedly raping an undergraduate near Sapele road in Benin.

The victim (name withheld), is a student of one of the tertiary institutions in the State, was said to have boarded the tricycle on 23 July 2021 to Ugbor area en route Airport road in Benin when the 24-year-old suspect, committed the alleged crime, according to police report.

The report revealed that the suspect, diverted to a lonely route midway after the journey had started, claiming the access road was no longer motorable, leaving the female passenger to suspect a sinister motive.

It also explained that the tricycle operator, brought out a machete and threatened slay the victim allow him have a canal knowledge of her at uncompleted building.

The development led to a scuffle between Akpan and the passenger who eventually buckled and robbed of undisclosed cash, iPhone before he fled the scene.

Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP. Kotongs Bello who confirmed the report, said the suspect was arrested through high technical intelligence.

Kontongs assured that the suspect will be charged to court when investigation is completed.

Speaking on the level of his part involvement, the tricycle operator, expressed regret over his action and pleaded for forgiveness.

“I regret my action, I am ashamed” when asked why he committed the crime.

“I really don’t know what came over me for the rape and the robbery”, he stressed.

Also speaking, the rape victim, told newsmen that she is yet to recover from the trauma.

“I called the “Keke NAPEP” man to carry me towards where I can get a taxi to Sapele Road.

“We agreed, and he took me only for me to see him with cutlass, insisting that he must sleep with me or have me killed.

“I have no choice than to surrender quickly. He slept with me in the bush, which has an uncompleted building.

“I begged him, and he refused to allow me to go. He later left me in the bush and collected the little money I had”, she wept.
