’13-year-old teenager attempted suicide before killing 79-year-old father in Edo’


13-year-old teenager simply identified as ‘Abubakar’ who reportedly murdered his father while asleep, attempted to commit suicide, months before he committed the crime on June 20, 2021 in Edo State, according to his elder brother, Abdulkareem Oronsaye.

79-year-old grandfather, Osariakhi Abdullahi Oronsaye better known as ‘Iron man’, was found on June 20, 2021 in the pool of his own blood in his bedroom, after he son hacked him to death with an axe at No. 30, Egbon Estate road, Evbuotubu by second Power Line, Ugbighoko Quarters, Egor Local Government Area of the State.

Speaking to our Correspondent in an exclusive interview on Wednesday in Benin City, Mr. Oronsaye Abdulkareem alleged that at different times the suspected murderer who had been arrested and remanded at the Children Welfare home, was also reported to have attempted to set his father’s car ablaze, which led to his arrest by police, but was subsequently released months ago.

In another instance, according to his elder brother, the teenager, had also been accused of using a pillow to sniff life out of the retired soldier who hails from Ovia South West Local Government Area of the State, before the tragedy struck on June 20, 2021.

“He said that my father did not take care of him. Before he killed my father father, he set fire under his Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). He used pillow to cover my daddy’s nose before too before the incident. But God saved him in that encounter.

“The was also another occasion, Abubakar went behind our father’s house and tied a rope to his neck. As he was about to hang himself, neighbours who sighted him quickly rescued him”, Abdulkareem Oronsaye said.

Police investigation had revealed that shortly before his death, Oronsaye, police operatives attached to Evbuotubu Division in Egor Local Government Area of the State, arrested him for threatening to kill his father. He was released after his late father pleaded on his behalf because he is a juvenile.

Our Correspondent could not ascertain if the teenager who is expected to face trial when he attains age 18 within in Edo State High court, has been presented for any mental health check as at the time of filing this report.

In the meantime, the burial rites of the slain retired soldier, is schedule to begin on July 23rd 2021.
