Escapee inmates killed during mission to abduct expatriate in Edo

Police operatives have ambushed and killed four-man kidnap gang on a mission to abduct an expatriate working at Presco Oil Company Plc on Tuesday by Benin-Sapele road in Benin City.

The quartet identified as Osaosemwen Osifo, David Ogba, Efosa Friday and Nelson Uchiko were all convicted in 2015 for arm robbery and kidnapping, went escaped when the Oko Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Benin during the EndSARS came under attack in last October by hoodlums.

Police reports said based on a tip-off, the Inspector General of Police Response Team (IRT) and the Anti Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit at Edo State police Command upon receipt of a credible information, intercepted and ambushed the suspects at the Benin By-pass on Tuesday in Benin.

Upon sighting the police, the armed gang, fired gunshots, which led to the death of three of them on-the-spot while Osaosemwen Osifo who was seriously injured during the attack died after he confessed to the crime.

Speaking on the level of his involvement shortly before he gave up the ghost, Osaosemwen Osifo alleged that he fled the prison during EndSARS riot and ran to Abuja,

He alleged that they regrouped and returned to crime when he returned from Abuja where he sougjt refusge after the jail break before luck ran out of them on Tuesday.

Osaosemwen better known as “K2”, the gang leader, said to engage in some armed robbery operations in Benin City and environs.

“I was in prison when they suddenly opened the gate last year, and we all escaped with my friends now.

“We then formed another gang to kidnap and raise money to travel out of Nigeria. I ran to Abuja and came back to Benin City for this kidnapping of the man working in Presco Company Ltd.

“I was shocked how the police got to know about our plan. Now, I have been hit. I regret this kidnapping”, he said.

Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP Kotongs Bello confirmed the report.
