Nine hostages rescued as police engage kidnappers in gun duel


Police operatives and local vigilante members have rescued nine hostages in Igieduma forest reserve on Benin-Auchi road, Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State.


Spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP Kotongs Bello in a statement on Sunday said the abductees were rescued on Sunday morning in a fierce gun duel with the kidnappers.

He said the Divisional police officer, DPO, Ehor, CSP Benafa Benjamin, acting on credible information from members of the public that a 14-seater white colour Toyota Hiace bus have been hijacked by the hoodlums, and immediately mobilised policemen and local vigilante for the operation.

He said the vehicle marked: XA 525 KRF, was driven by 40-year-old Mr. Karimu Momoh belonging to a private company, was coming from Auchi to Benin when it was intercepted by a group of gunmen suspected to be kidnappers at Igieduma Village on Benin-Auchi road.

Kotongs said, “the suspected kidnappers on sighting the Police and other team members opened fire, but the superior fire power from the team of police operatives made the suspected kidnappers to abandon the victims and escaped with bullet wounds into the thick forest”.

The police spokesman said the nine abductees who were rescued unhurt, include three male and six female.

“Bush combing, according to the police, is still on going for possible arrest of the hoodlums and suspected kidnappers”.

The statement, conveyed the assistances of the Commissioner of police in the State, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu that the Command will not relent in its effort in combating crime and criminality in the State.

He however appealed to the general public and especially Communities around Benin-Auchi road to continue to support the Police in its fight against criminality in the State.
