Police authorities say three persons have been killed at different locations in in Edo State in connection with a renewed two rival cult groups that started a week ago, leaving residents in panicky mode.
The recent among the incidents, happened on Saturday evening at a Lotto Betting Shop on Ologbotsere Street, off Benin Technical College (BTC) road in Egor Local Government Area the State.
Gunmen suspected to be members allegedly shot a member of Edo State Community Security Network (EDSN) simply identified as Endurance better known as “DMX” dead.
Responding to the incident, spokesman of the Nigeria police, Edo State Command, SP Kotongs Bello who confirmed the incident to our Correspondent on Sunday afternoon said: “Three persons have died so far since the fight between Man fight and Aye which started since last week.
“One of the killings occurred on Friday evening, the two others happened on Saturday morning and evening.
“One suspects is in our Custody”, according to him.
Investigation into the murder of Endurance revealed that the assailants trailed him from his home to the scene of crime where he was allegedly shot three times at a close range, forcing other stackers the sports’ bet to flee.
In utter dismay, other members of vigilance group in the area, immediately stormed the crime scene to rescue their colleague, only to found Endurance dead in the pool of his own blood.
Angered by the killing, the vigilance group took to the Street in a stop-and-search duty for the killers, but to no avail.
A witness who craved for anonymity revealed that the assailants came in two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz 4matic Saloon car and Toyota Camry Spider whose registration numbers are yet to be ascertained.
It was gathered that the victim was shot three times on his chest, before the unknown gunmen sped-off through the Medical Stores/Okhoro road in Benin.
The remains of the vigilance group member was later evacuated by the police division in the Area while residents of the area in disbelief broke down in tears.
The renewed cult violence in the past one week has claimed two lives so far in the area. This followed the killing of Augustine Izu, a final year Political Science student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), who was killed by unknown gunmen hours after writing his final Examination.
Izu was trailed to his residence outside the Campus hostel on Omage Street, off Federal Government Girls College Road (FGGC), Ugbowo, Benin, by his assailants who shot him dead in his room.
