A local hierarchy status tussle has embroiled Iguoshodi N’Ebudin Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State in Oath administration to check the activities of integrity-challenged charlatans in Benin Kingdom.
As part of measures to resolve the leadership crisis in the area, President of Benin solidarity Movement, Elder Curtis Ugbo, has therefore appealed to the Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II to call all the actors the crisis to order and make them swear oath of loyalty at the Oba of Benin palace
He made the appeal at Press briefing on Tuesday in Benin City, Edo State Capital where a group of elders of Iguoshodi N’Ebudin publicly, denounced a factional group led Mr. Sunday Osahon who parade himself as the Okaeghele (youth Leader) of the Community.
“With this Sunday Osahon actions and inactions as stated above, and a few others who parade themselves as as Enigie, Odionwere, Ohens, and Okaeghele, but operate contrary to the aspirations of the Benin Traditional Law and Customs in Benin Kingdom, is a sure indication that His Royal Majesty Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, N’ Ogidigan, need to call them to order and should henceforth make all of them swear to an Oath of loyalty at the Oba of Benin palace before they are allowed to function in their various capacities”, Ugbo said.
According to him, Traditionally, when an elder, Odionwere (most senior elder) dies, it is after three years after the burial is done before the second most senior (Ozukpogieva) is sworn-in as his successor based on the approval of Oba of Benin palace.
The President of group, also called on the Law Enforcement Agency to beam searchlight on the activities of some individuals including one Comrade Edokpayi and Comrade Aigbogun whose stock-in-trade is to act based on financial inducement, operate under the guise of human Rights activism by fuelling crisis in the various Communities in Benin Kingdom and the Benin Traditional Council (BTC).
In a remark, Mr. Uwuigbe Omoragbon, Ozukpogieva (second most Senior elder in Iguoshodi N’Ebudin, accused the the factional youth leader, Mr. Sunday Osahon of promoting civil strife in the Community and indiscriminate selling of ancestral land in the Community, leading to his rejection by the people.
He alleged that the failure of Mr. Sunday Osahon to provide satisfactory financial records of Iguoshodi N’Ebudin Community, following the death of Pa Osunde Osareren last November, complicated the situation for him by attempting to poison the goodwill of the Oba of Benin.
On his part, the Okaeghele (Youth Leader) of Iguoshodi N’Ebudin, Mr. Uhunoma Osaigbovo and elder Osatohanmwen Igbineweka, accused members of the disgruntled group led by Mr. Osahon of locking up the Community shrine, thereby denying the people access.
The duo also stated that the purported document by the warring faction in which claimed confers on them the authority to assume the position of leadership in the Community is not only fake because it did not emanate from the Oba of Benin palace and therefore has no place in Benin history.
Recall that some elders of of Iguoshodi N’Ebudin, led by Mr. Sunday Osahon in conjunction with a Benin based Pressure group, Talakawa Parliament, last week, urged the Benin monarch to wade into the crisis by setting up an independent panel of inquiry into the communal crisis.
The monarch is the prescribed authority of Benin native laws and Customs on matters that concern Villages and Communities in Oredo, Egor, Orhionmwon, Uhumwode, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North East, Ovia South West and Ovia North East Local Government Areas of the State.
