How gunmen killed driver, kidnapped expatriate in Edo — CP

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted an expatriate, a Civil Engineer with Heartland Construction Company Limited, near Benin Ahor bypass in Edo State.

The State Commissioner of police, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu who revealed this the police headquarters on Wednesday in Benin City, said the driver of vehicle was shot dead by the hoodlums immediately.

The police boss said the expatriate with his driver in company of two policemen who are not from the State police Command were on a transit when the attack occurred on Tuesday.

He stated that the two policemen attached to the expatriate who had engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle were overpowered before the hoodlums took the expatriate away to unknown destination.

Ogbadu while assuring that the expatriate would be released unhurt, clarified that the security personnel involved in the attack neither lost their riffles nor killed in the attack.

“A driver conveying a white man being escorted by two policemen. Although the policemen are not from our Command. They shot at them.

“In the process, they killed the driver. The incident happened after Ahor Bypass.

“We have secured the town. But we have a problem with the bypass. We suppressed the bypass and because criminals are mobile, they have moved further to the highway.

“One would have thought that somebody who has an escort is protected enough. If your escort is being shot at, even if you are falling down, you need to reply before you give up as a security personnel.

“Thank God, the men were shot. They survived it and held unto their riffles and the firing. But the only thing is that the white man was taken away.

“We are given expatriates enough protection. In Edo State, you cannot just come and kidnap a white man except on few occasions like those on transit which are rare cases”, CP Ogbadu said.

According to him, “What the kidnappers do now is that when a vehicle is coming they will fire at the vehicle immediately so that the vehicle can stop”.
