Mrs. Bridget Eitche, widow of Mr. Sunny Etchie, the youth Leader (Okaighele) of Kolokolo Community, Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, has protested against courtroom antics in the trial of a gang suspected killers of her husband a year ago in the Community.
With the tumult of emotions, fury, fear, despair, dread, she clung on to the shoulders of her family members who accompanied her to the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State in Benin City on Monday demanding for speedy prosecution of Chief Johnson Atseleghe and 11 others who were fingered in the murder of the 38-year-old man.
Chief Johnson Atselege and 11 Others are had been arraigned for alleged conspiracy, kidnapping and murder of Mr. Sunny Eitche, the Okaighele of Kolokolo Community in Ologbo Dukedom, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
The accused were arraigned for offence which contravened Sections 516, 327 and 316 (1) punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section 2 (2) punishable under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2013 of Edo State.
Addressing newsmen on Monday,35-year-old widow revealed that said apart from the fact that life has not been rosy for her and his four Children after the death of her beloved husband, she is particularly worried that the actors who were charged to court, still walk freely in the street while she grief with the irreparable loss daily.
“For the sake of my Children, I need justice. My four Children have been asking me, mummy when is our daddy coming back? And I have no answer.
“The case in court is taking time. Is it because we do not have money. Chief Johnson is moving around everywhere.
Asked how she has been coping with the trauma of widowhood, she said, “it has not been easy”.
Mr. Ayokotie Benson, spokesman of the protesters who were armed with inscriptions such as “Johnson Atseleghe should not be allowed to walk Free” ” we want Justice for Ologbo People”, “Johnson Atseleghe is a wicked man”,
“Today (Monday June 7, 2021) makes it a year that Sunny Eitche was killed, we cannot get his body to even bury, and we are calling for quick Justice to prevail over those who murdered him in cold blood.
“Today marks one year since he was murdered. We are crying for justice. One year now and we are yet to see any good thing in the trial. We know that the State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is a man that wants justice for his people.
“We our amiable Governor to wade into this matter…All we need is justice. The trial is too slow. We do not know what is happening.
We cannot sleep. We have pain. So, we are begging the Governor, the NUJ, DPP, the CJ and all that are concern to wade into this matter.
“Those who killed him are there walking freely in the street, is it because they have the money? Please Justice should prevail.”
“We are appealing to the governor, Godwin Obaseki, Oba of Benin , Oba Ewuare II, and the good people of Nigeria to come to our aid, by talking to the judiciary to quicken Justice.
In the same vein, Comrade Charles Godfrey, said: “We are appealing to relevant authorities. We do not want justice truncated. Sunny Eitche had been murdered over a year now and seems to be nothing promising in the trial of the murder suspects.
“We want the judiciary to expedite action on the trial because the way things are going now, we are swing a kind of fowl play. But we are appealing to relevant authorities should wake up and ensure that justice is done. We do not want this killing to set a dangerous precedent.
