Why ASUU isn’t a problem to AAU — VC breaks silence on resumption

Prof. Osarieme Benson Osadolor, acting Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State has broken silence about his resumption at the institution.

He said that the Academic Staff Union of Universities in the institution is not a problem to the Management because the AAU Special intervention Powers) Provision of Law 2021, has taken care of the dissolved Governing Board of AAU by the State Government.

Recall that the visitor of the University, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced the appointment of Prof. Osadolor as the new acting Vice Chancellor of the school after the immediate past substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo had served out his tenure in office.

His appointment comes barely 24 hours after the Governor signed AAU Special intervention Powers) Provision of Law 2021 which was passed by the State House of Assembly into Law.

Speaking on his plans to reposition the University, the acting Vice Chancellor, promised reset the institution on the path of greatness in accordance to the mandate of the State Government and the founding fathers.

According to him, “Asked if he has opened a negotiation channel with ASUU, the VC said: Well, I do not think that is a problem for us.

“Our plan is to ensure that all courses and Departments are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission.

“We will look into the books and see what the problem is and act accordingly. If there are problems, we will address it.

Responding on how he intends to scale the hurdle in AAU without a Governing Board, Prof. Osadolor said: “There are specific provisions for that in the new laws (Special intervention Laws).

“I have resumed quite alright…Basically, my vision is not different from that of His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki to reposition the University. That is to reset the University in terms of its vision and Mission and accomplish the goal for which the founding fathers want the University to be among other Universities in the world. We are determined to achieve that. We will do our best to accomplish that.

While brinkmanship between the striking lecturers and the new Management continues, the later had directed students of the University to return to Campus for commencement of academic activities.

But the Chairman of ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma Chapter, Prof. Monday Igbafen, urged students to disregard the directive, describing the order as a ferry tales.

Also, the Prof. Fred Esumeh,
Benin Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, in a Press released on May 21, 2021, criticised the decision recent actions regarding the appointment of the acting VC, stressing that the moves constitute an assault on the long-cherished University autonomy, and portend grave and terrifying danger in the management and administration of public Universities in Nigeria.

The Union also charged authorities concerned to acknowledge owing workers/retirees unpaid salaries of five (5) months and unpaid check-off dues, pensions, gratuities and other sundry deductions from staff salaries for over one year as a criteria for ending the strike.

TheNewspad had reported that the acting Vice Chancellor of AAU, is former Dean of students Affairs from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Professor of History from Edo State.
